Live Report - IPL 2023 - Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Mumbai Indians, Bengaluru

By Sidharth Monga

Emphatic start for RCB

It has been a long time coming. the homecoming to Bangalore. Amid lout chants of Aar-Cee-Bee, they close out their first match emphatically. It all started with a superb bowling effort. Mohammed Siraj was phenomenal in the powerplay. Reece Topley swung the ball and looked dangerous, and Karn Sharma took wickets in the middle overs. Mumbai Indians were outclassed and blown away. Their top order looks like their headache.
Yes they could have, and should have, bowled better, but it is in the first innings that MI lost the match. Some of the bowling was excellent in the way they followed their plans in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma rightly points out they were 30-40 short.
And then the two men in the picture above clinically took apart the MI bowling.
We sign off here, and look forward to your company tomorrow.

Big win for RCB

22 Number of balls left as RCB close out the chase. Great intent shown after the good start to make sure they get a big NRR boost too.

Karthik joins an IPL great

14 Number of ducks for Dinesh Karthik in the IPL. No one has more, but Rohit Sharma and Mandeep Singh have as many. Had Rohit scored one fewer today, he would have made sure the record belonged to him.

Kohli, Archer's nemesis

28 Number of runs Kohli has taken off Archer, the most anyone has scored off Archer in a single match. Two years ago, he also took 24 off Archer. Overall, Archer's record against Kohli is not that bad: 64 balls, 85 runs, but he has never got Kohli out.

50 times 50

50 Number of times Virat Kohli has reached 50 or more in the IPL. Only David Warner has got there more often: a whopping 60 times.

Fifty for Kohli

The people of Bangalore sold out this homecoming well in advance. they queued up hours before the match. They wanted two things: a win, and runs from Kohli. Both are happening. Virat Kohli has brought up his fifty off 38 balls, and RCB need just 59 off 48 with 10 wickets in hand.

Fifty off 29

A near-perfect evening for Faf du Plessis. Took a stunner running back, had a wide call overturned, and is making a mockery of what MI might have thought was a total that might give them a chance. After bringing up his fifty off 29, he smacks another six off the 30th. He charged at the swing bowlers, used his touch against the quicker ones, and has now taken apart the first offspinner thrown at him.

It includes a half chance right back at him first ball, and a slower ball smacked over mid-off for a flat six by Virat Kohli.

RCB down the track

MI start their defence with two left-arm swing bowlers, Jason Behrendorff and Arshad Khan. The RCB openers quickly figure out they can cut the swing by charging at them. Both Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli do that to good effect, and charge to 30 for 0 in three overs. Jofra Archer is left with too much to do. Will that be the case all season?

Behrendorff in, Surya out

MI make their Impact substitution at the start of the innings, bringing in swing bowler Jason Behrendorff for Suryakumar Yadav. RCB make a watchful start against the swinging ball, taking five off the first over.

Mumbai finish off in style

It seems like the plan to Tilak Varma is to bowl short. The database is not exhaustive but teams did manage to keep him quiet when they bowled short to him. However, once he managed to pull boundaries off short balls, the bowlers came back to his arc, and 60 runs came off the last four overs. Mumbai end up with 171 for 4 thanks to his 84 off 46. They were 123 for 7 at one stage. Still not a big score at Chinnaswamy. Especially if there is dew later on.

This is the 19th over, bowled by Mohammed Siraj. Five wides in it. The first time there has been an 11-ball over in the IPL. Mumbai come to life. They are 149 for 7 in 19, thanks largely to Tilak Varma's unbeaten 73 off 43.

Karn Sharma keeps taking hitters down

After Wadhera, it's the big-hitting Tim David. It is a good set of deliveries put together. The last two are: a wide legbreak followed by a straight one. David swings down the wrong line. MI 105 for 6 in the 16th over. That's not encouraging at all.

T20 debutant Nehal Wadhera vs serial IPL winner Karn Sharma. Wadhera turns his slow start into a good one with two massive sixes off Karn on a pitch with little turn. Sp the wrong'un is not quite an option. However, with the third ball, Karn goes really full, not letting Wadhera get under it, and - still under the pressure to keep hitting - Wadhera tries a third six and finds long-on. MI 99 for 5 in 14 overs.

RCB march on

Michael Bracewell has Suryakumar Yadav with what looks like a short and wide ball, but perhaps the extra bounce means Yadav hasn't been able to keep the cut down.
One significant blip on a drew evening for them is the injury to reece Topley. I never liked him diving around. He had already saved five runs with his dives when he went for a third one, and landed awkwardly on the shoulder. He walked off immediately.

Rohit goes too

Mohammed Siraj could have had him caught with a sharp bouncer, but he collided with Dinesh Karthik and neither could hold on to the catch. However, Rohit Sharma has not been able to capitalise and has nicked off off Akash Deep in the next over for 1 off 10. MI 20 for 3 in 5.2 overs.

Green gone

115 Number of runs Cameron Green had scored in powerplays off 77 balls before this match. He got off to a good start here, timing the ball beautifully, but Reece Topley has bowled him with a yorker. Gone for 5 off 4.

Siraj's great start

Mohammed Siraj must have bowled a lot to Ishan Kishan in the India nets. He knows better than to give him any width. He keeps tucking Kishan up again and again, and is bowling his outswinger, which moves further in for the left-hand batter Kishan. Eventually Kishan has a big flick, gets a fat leading edge, and is caught at deep third. MI 11 for 1 in 2.3 overs.
Time for Cameron Green now.

Piyush Chawla is back

He was on ESPNcricinfo's expert panel last IPL. He then went to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Piyush Chawla is now back as a player in the IPL. He played five matches, took six wickets, and went at 6.8 an over in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. Now we don't know the fitness statuses with these teams, but he is potentially playing ahead of Kumar Kartikeya.

RCB chase

RCB have won the toss, and will be fielding. Faf du Plessis, Michael Bracewell, Glenn Maxwell, and Reece Topley are their overseas players. Du Plessis says there has been dew in the preceding days.
Tim David, Jofra Archer and Cameron Green are Mumbai Indians' overseas players. They have Nehal Wadhera, who is on his T20 debut. The 22-year-old has played only first-class cricket so far. He is from Punjab, is a left-hand batter, and bowls legspin.
Mumbai will be hoping they can negate the disadvantage of batting first a little through these new paying conditions of Impact Player and the fact that they get to choose the XI after the toss.
Royal Challengers Bangalore 1 Faf du Plessis (capt.), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Michael Bracewell, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Shahbaz Ahmed, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Harshal Patel, 8 Akash Deep, 9 Karn Sharma, 10 Reece Topley, 11 Mohammed Siraj

Big match, big names missing

RCB vs MI. Two big-name teams. One still looking for its first title but one of the favourites this year. The other five times champions but coming off an ordinary season. The biggest talking point right now is the names missing: Jasprit Bumrah, Jhye Richardson, Josh Hazlewood, Wanindu Hasaranga and Rajat Patidar.
Amid all that, Jofra Archer is back. How exciting. That's probably the best news cricket has had all year.
