Live Report - Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, Mumbai

By Hemant Brar

Cracker of a game!

Punjab Kings 214 for 8 (Curran 55, Bhatia 41, Chawla 2-15) beat Mumbai Indians 210 for 6 (Green 67, Suryakumar 57, Arshdeep 4-29) by 13 runs
Phew! What a game we have had. Punjab Kings’ innings was going nowhere. After 14 overs, they were 105 for 4 with Harpreet Singh Bhatia batting on 15 off 16 and Sam Curran on 8 off 12. But in the next six overs, they ransacked 109. Bhatia ended with 41 off 28, Curran 55 off 29, and Jitesh Sharma 25 off just seven. That lifted Kings to a formidable 214 for 8.
In response, Mumbai Indians were always in the contest, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s 27-ball 44 and Cameron Green’s 43-ball 67. Suryakumar Yadav then threatened to snatch the game from Kings with a blazing half-century. That’s when Arshdeep Singh rose to the occasion. He dismissed Suryakumar in the 18th over, and then with 16 required from six balls, he conceded just two while breaking the middle stumps of Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera with back-to-back deliveries.
The 13-run win has taken Kings to fifth position with eight points from seven games. In fact, the top five teams all have eight points each, only the net run rate separating them.
So, that's all from my side for this game. See you soon.

Arshdeep shows his skills

What an over by Arshdeep Singh. With 16 required from six balls, he gave away just two. JUST TWO. After a single to David, he bowled a short one to Tilak Varma, which the batter failed to connect. The next ball was a searing yorker that broke the middle stump in half.
With 15 needed from three, Mumbai brought in their Impact Player, Nehal Wadhera. Wadhera charged down the track but failed to connect, and Arshdeep shattered the middle stump once again. For the hat-trick ball, Arshdeep switched to around the wicket to Archer but ended up bowling a wide yorker instead of a straight one. The final delivery was a high full toss, and Archer could pick up only a single off it.

David's 114-metre monster

Ellis dishes out a juicy full toss on the pads and Tim David duly sends it into the space over square leg. A 114-metre six, second only to Faf du Plessis' 115-metre hit.
But that was the only boundary Ellis conceded in the over. Mumbai need 16 from the final over. Arshdeep Singh will have the ball.

Big blow for Mumbai - Arshdeep removes Surya

It was a low full toss and Surya flicked it uppishly. It was flying to Taide's left at midwicket. He leapt in the air and plucked it with both hands to leave the Wankhede in shock. Tilak Varma is the new batter. He is been in supreme form but Kings are right back in this game.

Fifty for Surya

Off just 23 balls. And it couldn't have come via a more Surya-esque shot. Curran bowled one full and straight only for Surya to move across and execute a falling scoop over the keeper's head for four. He ends the over with a six. Mumbai now need 40 from the last three overs.

Ellis gets Green

A 17-run over by Rahul Chahar, in which Green brought up his fifty with a six, brought the equation down to 66 required from five overs. Green started the next over by hitting Ellis a four and six but then miscued a back-of-the-hand slower one and Curran settled under it.

Surya presses on

While we were busy listening to Tendulkar, Suryakumar was busy picking up boundaries. Of the 17 balls he has faced so far, five went to the boundary and two over it. During this period, he also reached 6000 T20 runs. Sampath tells me he is the fifth-fastest to the mark in terms of balls.
Fewest balls taken to reach 6000 T20 runs: 3550 - Andre Russell 3890 - Glenn Maxwell 3918 - Kieron Pollard 4008 - Chris Gayle 4017 - Suryakumar Yadav
Mumbai need 83 from six overs. Surya is batting on 39 off 17 and Green on 45 off 36.

Sachin speaks. We listen

Sachin Tendulkar, who will turn 50 on April 24, speaks to Ravi Shastri on the sidelines:
"It looks like a good track. The pitch has become a little bit sticky but as time goes by, I think the ball will start skidding. [On his 50th birthday] This has been the slowest half-century of my life but the most fulfilling one. It has had lots of ups and down, and I have throughly enjoyed it. Thirty-four years in the game, and this is the best thing that happened in my life. And that's what I wanted. The dream started in 1989 and it has been a beautiful journey. [On cake cutting during the break] I told the players to let me enjoy being in the 40s for a few more hours. Fifty is around the corner but it's nice to be in the 40s. The game has changed immensely post-2008, after the IPL happened. Test cricket is more or less the same, the pace has increased slightly because of T20s. In the ODIs, I have said on record, that the bowlers are at a bit of a disadvantage because of two new balls. In T20s, the Impact Player has made a big difference. The average total has gone up, earlier it used to be 180. Now it's 200."

Livingstone breaks through with Rohit's wicket

And it is a soft dismissal. Rohit looked to turn an innocuous length ball to the leg side but ended up playing early. Livingstone took a couple of steps to his right to accept an easy catch.
Suryakumar Yadav comes in at No. 4 and gets off the mark straight away with a single.

Rohit, Green keep Mumbai on track

Mumbai needed a strong start to give themselves a chance of chasing down 215. Rohit and Green have done exactly that. The pair hit five fours and three sixes inside the powerplay to take the side to 54 for 1 after six. They are still behind the asking rate but the platform has been set. And Kings have just shown what can be done here if you have wickets in hand.
2

Kishan departs early

Matthew Short gave away just seven in the first over. Then he took a superb catch, running to his left from deep point, along the cover boundary, to send back Ishan Kishan. Arshdeep Singh was the bowler, and it was his 50th IPL wicket.
Two balls later, Arshdeep banged one into the pitch, which kept slightly low and sneaked underneath Rohit's attempted pull.

Ellis comes in as Impact Player

So, Kings have brought in their Impact Player. It's Nathan Ellis - they had started with only three overseas players. Prabhsimran Singh has been subbed out.

Kings 214 for 7

What a comeback! After 14 overs, Kings were 105 for 4. They looted 109 from the next six. Curran and Bhatia consolidated for a while before going on a boundary spree. Bhatia smashed 41 off 28 despite being 16 off 20 at one point. Curran 55 off 29, and Jitesh put the finishing touch 25 off just seven. Before the start of the game, Kumble had said 190-195 could be a par total. If so, Kings have given themselves a real chance of picking up two points here.

Green travels as well; Kings eye 200-plus

A 25-run over now. Curran smashes Cameron Green for two successive sixes to start the 18th over. After a single on the third, Green dismisses Bhatia, but then Jitesh Sharma launches him for two more maximums.

Curran and Bhatia vs Arjun and Archer

31 Runs conceded by Arjun Tendulkar in 16th over
This could be the momentum-shifting over Kings needed so desperately. Tendulkar returns for his third only to be taken apart by Curran and Bhatia. The pair hit two sixes and four fours in a 31-run over that also included a beamer. That would have been the last ball of the over - it hit Bhatia's glove and beat short third. The resulting free hit was short and down the leg side and Bhatia pulled that past a diving Chawla at short fine leg.
Archer too fails to limit the damage despite nailing four yorkers; Curran and Bhatia take 13 off him.

Curran, Bhatia consolidate

Curran and Bhatia have managed only 35 runs in the last five overs but more importantly, Kings still have six wickets in hand and, therefore, a chance of a strong finish. Ten an over from here will take them to 178. But will that be enough?

Archer: 'Body's not going to be 100% straight away'

Archer has conceded 20 from his two overs for far. This is what he had told Matt Roller earlier this week about his comeback:
"Obviously the last two weeks aren't exactly what you would hope for after being so fully active. But it's what you expect when you've been off for a long time: the body's not going to be 100% straight away.
"There are going to be moments where it feels a lot more serious than it actually is. I don't know which game will be the next game, but I'm just trying to put myself in the best position possible [to play].
"To be honest, I still want to bowl fast and stuff - but when you feel good, you bowl good. I just want to focus on feeling good at the minute."
Meanwhile, Chawla has got two in one over. First, he had Livingstone stumped. Anticipating the batter to come down the track, he slipped one down the leg side. Kishan did well to collect it and break the wicket.
Three balls later, Taide attempted a sweep but the ball hit him on the pads and dribbled onto the stumps. Curran walks in at No. 6 with a slip in place. Harpreet Bhatia at the other end.

Tendulkar strikes

It was a bit of a surprise when Tendulkar was taken off after just one over. But he comes back in the first over after the powerplay to trap Prabhsimran lbw with an excellent yorker, the ball sneaking underneath the bat to hit the shoe. Taide, however, picks up two boundaries on either side of that wicket to take Kings to 70 for 2 after seven.
Liam Livingstone in at No. 4.

Prabhsimran, Taide accelerate

In the fourth over, Behrendorff slightly erred in his length and Prabhsimran took advantage of the shorter boundary to hit him for two sixes in three balls. From the other end, Taide ramped Archer for another maximum.
Rohit introduced spin in the form of Piyush Chawla in the sixth over, and the two batters picked up a boundary each off him. To slow things down, Mumbai have taken a strategic break.

The Green move works

After two quiet overs, Short flicked Green's second ball through deep square leg for four. He was eyeing another boundary on the next ball but ended up pulling it to short midwicket where Piyush Chawla pouched it just above his head.
Atharva Taide comes in at No. 3.
Kings 20 for 1 after three
2

Swing with new ball

Mumbai's left-arm seamers, Arjun Tendulkar and Jason Behrendorff, have found movement in the air with the new ball. Tendulkar even ended up bowling two wides in the opening over as the ball swung down the leg side. Behrendorff exhibited better control but was unlucky as an outside edge on the last ball of the over went for four through the vacant slip region. Short was the lucky better.
So, it's just one over for Tendulkar for now. A bit surprising. Green replaces him in the attack.
Kings 13 for no loss after two

Meanwhile, Titans have stunned Super Giants

Chasing 136 on a slow home surface, Lucknow Giants needed 39 off 45 at one stage with nine wickets in hand. But Noor Ahmad, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma combined to eke out a seven-run win for Gujrat Titans. The win has taken Titans to eight points from six games. The top four teams are now separated only by the net run rate. Super Giants are also part of that cluster but have played one extra game than others.

Mumbai opt to bowl, Archer returns

It was a no-brainer. The Wankhede has been a chasing venue, with the teams batting second winning 22 of the last 32 night T20s played here. But the big news is Jofra Archer is back. Rohit said that's the only change for them.
Sam Curran, too, was looking to bowl first. Kings have named only three overseas players in their batting XI - Nathan Ellis and Sikandar Raza among five substitutes. If they suffer a collapse, they may consider bringing in Raza. Else it will be Ellis.
The square boundaries are shorter - 59 and 65 metres. Down the ground, it's 75 metres. We are not expecting much dew.
Anil Kumble says "190-195 will be a competitive score" here. This game is being played on the same pitch where the MI-CSK was. Batting first, Mumbai could manage only 157 for 8 in that match, and CSK chased it down in 18.1 overs.
Here are the playing XIs:
Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Cameron Green, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Tim David, 7 Jofra Archer, 8 Arjun Tendulkar, 9 Hrithik Shokeen, 10 Piyush Chawla, 11 Jason Behrendorff
Substitutes: Nehal Wadhera, Vishnu Vinod, Ramandeep Singh, Kumar Kartikeya, Shams Mulani
Punjab Kings: 1 Atharva Taide, 2 Prabhsimran Singh, 3 Matthew Short, 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Harpreet Singh, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 M Shahrukh Khan, 8 Sam Curran (capt), 9 Harpreet Brar, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Arshdeep Singh
Substitutes: Nathan Ellis, Mohit Rathee, Sikandar Raza, Rishi Dhawan, Gurnoor Brar

Who should be Punjab Kings' fourth overseas player?

In Dhawan's absence, Sam Curran will lead Kings once again. Rabada is also unavailable, so Nathan Ellis will occupy the second overseas slot. Liam Livingstone too is a certainty.
That leaves Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Matthew Short and Sikandar Raza fighting for one slot. Rajapaksa made a blazing half-century in Kings' first game, Raza was the Player of the Match the last time he played, and Short has scored two quick 30s in his four outings. So who should take the fourth overseas slot?

Hello, world

Hello and welcome to game 31 of IPL 2023. It's Mumbai Indians taking on Punjab Kings at the Wankhede.
There's a popular meme template: how it started and how it's going. Mumbai's journey so far in this season fits that perfectly. They began the season with two crushing defeats before bouncing back with three wins on the trot.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings, after winning their first two games, have lost three of the last four. Moreover, they will once again be without Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada. Can they still beat Mumbai in Mumbai and return to winning ways?
We are still 20 minutes away from the toss. So if you are seeing this on a mobile device and didn’t know it already, ESPNcricinfo is better experienced on our apps. And we have recently rolled out an update for Android, which you can download or update here.
