IPL 2023 - Live Report: Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai

By Sreshth Shah

Schrodinger's CSK fans

Chennai Super Kings 138 for 3 (Conway 77*, Gaikwad 35*, Markande 2-23) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 134 (Abhishek 34, Jadeja 3-22) by seven wickets
CSK's fans are happy. CSK's fans are sad.
Happy because they've won with eight balls to spare. Sad because MS Dhoni did not get to bat.
It be like that sometimes. For now, they are back to winning ways at home and comfortably settled among the top teams this season.
It was the kind of total that would only prove tough with regular wickets. The other night in Delhi, KKR's spinners managed to do just that and made chasing 128 tough. Tonight, no such thing from Sunrisers. The bowlers weren't very expensive because the CSK batters didn't go very hard. They didn't have to, except possibly finishing the game an over earlier. That's all from the Live Blog. Remember to catch all the report, analysis and T20 Time Out videos on the ESPNcricinfo website.

CSK aren't worried about NRR

CSK don't mind taking this till the final over, it appears. Conway's boundaries have dried up, and both Rahane and Rayudu struggled with timing. Markande picks up a second wicket to make CSK three down, but SRH just don't have enough runs to play with tonight.
We're now waiting for CSK to go over the line, and credit to SRH for ensuring their NRR didn't take a massive hit tonight.

Mayank impresses, Mayank strikes

No they are not the same person. Sehwag's nephew Mayank Dagar has been efficient if not extraordinary today as a slow left-arm spinner. He was the Impact Player introduced after the first innings.
On the other hand, Mayank Markande has snapped up Ajinkya Rahane with a big legbreak delivery that took an edge to first slip.
Conway continues to motor along with Rayudu - another Impact Player - in at No. 4. CSK need 22 in 28

Conway wears a guilty look...

... as Gaikwad is run out at the non-striker's end by way of a run out after a straight drive. Umran Malik got a hand to it and Gaikwad is well out of his crease. Out for a 30-ball 35 with two fours. Pretty sure these two had discussed completing a ten-wicket win tonight. That won't happen.
Conway for his own part hit Mayank Markande for a cut to reach his fifty in 33 balls in the previous over. He now needs to brush that dismissal off and continue batting the way he is. CSK 87/1 in 11 overs with Rahane walking in.

Conway's at play

That sixth over from Jansen would be such a deflater for the Sunrisers. Gaikwad took a single off the first ball, and after that to polish off the last five balls of the powerplay, Conway goes....

Killing 'em with kindness

CSK's openers are not being brutal. They are simply milking boundaries through the gaps or making the Sunrisers fielders give long chases to the boundary. That's sapping the energy out of the Sunrisers and the partnership blossoms to 35/0 in five overs for CSK.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been on point but Marco Jansen erred too much leg side and paid the price for it with boundaries. Aiden Markram's one over goes for 11. Sunrisers desperate for a breakthrough with Jansen bowling the sixth.

Pathirana tidy, CSK need 135

The fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has produced a terrific spell of 1-22 in four overs after being introduced late. That caps off a terrific evening for the hosts' bowlers, led by Ravindra Jadeja's 3-22. Don't forget Akash Singh's 1-17 in the powerplay either.
The Sunrisers lost their way after Brook and Sharma fell. They don't have a lot of great spin options either on a surface where spinners did a great job through the middle. CSK are big favourites to make a northward run on the points table.
Sunrisers will be so disappointed. Everyone in the top 5 got starts but failed thereafter. Their bowlers will have to bail them out tonight, if at all.

Sunrisers lose their fizz

All those wickets to spin - led by Jadeja's three-for - followed by Klaasen's dismissal to the slingmaster Matheesha Pathirana have made it one-way traffic lately. CSK dominating with the onus on Marco Jansen and local boy Washington Sundar to give them a respectable finish. The side will be massively disappointed sliding from 71 for 1 in 9 overs to being at 119 for 6 in 18 overs

CSK take three in three overs

Tripathi had hit just one four and one six, and generally was not batting like the Tripathi we know. His wicket for 21 brought in Heinrich Klaasen at No. 5.
Next over, Theekshana gets one to turn and bounce, and Markram is gone without much impact too. Mayank Agarwal has finally walked in at No. 6.
Is this the best use of Mayank in this team? No. 6? He doesn't bat in this position and doesn't usually start his innings this late. And he looks shaky right at the start where he survives a caught-and-bowled only because Klaasen got in the way of Jadeja. But that's about all the luck Agarwal will have. Dhoni has him stumped in the same over and Jadeja has a third!. Sunrisers are sliding at 95/5 in 13.5 overs

Abhishek has thrown it away

Or maybe we're being too harsh here. Maybe Sunrisers could afford to lose Abhishek Sharma with nine wickets still in the bag at the time. And perhaps he was told at the Strategic timeout to keep striking.
He returns to the dug out after 26-ball 34, falling to Jadeja. It was an innings that helped Sunrisers keep their score ticking in the powerplay. In that sense, it was a job well done and what was needed after their historically slow powerplay performances this season.
The IPL 2023 also comes full season for Abhishek in fact. He opened in SRH's first game but then lost his opener's spot after suffering an injury. Then when he returned, he didn't have a place at the top because Brook was promoted. Today he produced a solid innings with Mayank getting demoted.
Speaking of Mayank, he doesn't walk in at No. 4 either. Markram joins Tripathi. Sunrisers 76/2 in 10

Spinners not troubling much

Theekshana bowled the final over of the powerplay and conceded 10. Moeen Ali's first ball went for a six for another ten-run over. And Jadeja concedes a four to start his spell too. A total of 27 runs in three overs of spin with only three boundary hits. That's perfect going for Sunrisers.
Abhishek has been enjoying the off-side lately after initially enjoying behind square on the leg. Tripathi has been busy, hopping around his crease to try and create gaps. This is just the kind of start they'd have wanted. Sunrisers 62/1 in 8 overs

Akash gets deserved reward

Just when the partnership was looking to take off, Akash Singh gets the breakthrough. Brook had hit two exquisite boundaries in the fourth over after taking some initial time to settle in. But now he's slashed it to backward point. Gone for a 13-ball 18.
Akash deserved that wicket. He had induced two inside-edges off Brook in the previous over and was clearly troubling Brook with the swing. This one went across with the angle and Brook's shot got the edge. He's 1 for 17 in three overs.
Meanwhile, Mayank does not walk out at No. 3. Tripathi joins Abhishek with the score 35/1 in five

New partner for Brook

Harry Brook and Abhishek Sharma were captains of their U-19 national teams in 2017 playing against each other. Tonight, they're opening the batting, with Mayank Agarwal demoted.
I suspect that's because Abhishek is a good player of spin (SR 147), so can counter it if CSK go to it early to target Brook.
But CSK haven't for the first two overs atleast. Akash Singh and Tushar Deshpande start proceedings. Two boundaries in two overs and Sunrisers are 13/0.
This partnership could be a pairing of the future, one that can serve Sunrisers for many years to come. Sunrisers' backroom staff would love for them to have a good outing today.

First innings talking points...

- Sunrisers have the lowest powerplay average and strike-rate among all IPL 2023 teams. CSK may overwhelm them with spin early to keep Harry Brook quiet. He has a strike-rate of 110 against spin and is yet to hit a six v spin.
- On the other hand, CSK have the worst powerplay bowling economy, conceding 11+ per over. Sunrisers would like to take advantage of that. CSK will hope Maheesh Theekshana returns to his strong powerplay bowling performances from last season.
- Overall, though, Sunrisers struggle against spin and have the worst strike-rate v spin. That despite Markram delivering at an SR of 180 v spin this season. They'll want Agarwal to also come good and also hope the Indian batters Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma make good use of this batting-friendly track.
- Sunrisers also need a designated finisher. That's a big missing piece of their puzzle with No. 6 Klaasen often walking in sooner than they'd like. Him batting late can help the Orange Army take advantage of some inexperienced CSK bowling at the death.

"50-50 call", says Dhoni

He's talking about the toss there. He chooses to bowl first but says it was a 50-50 call. He was tempted to bat since its unlikely dew will play an effect because of the early rain.
Markram says Sunrisers batted first against KKR and dominated there, so he's confident SRH can repeat it. No Adil Rashid in the SRH 16.

Welcome...

Away teams have been enjoying a terrific run recently in the IPL, but Sunrisers Hyderabad come to Dhoni's fortress with some thinking to do about their choice of spinners. Adil Rashid is a tempting option, but he hasn't played in two weeks. It shall also be a test for Harry Brook, who has struggled against spin in the IPL but Aiden Markram on this pitch sounds like a delight.
Chennai Super Kings will want to return to winning ways at home, after losing here nine days ago against RR. Their batting - boosted by Ajinkya Rahane's good touch - has masked some of their bowling woes, and probably start 60-40 favourites to take the two points tonight.
This is Sreshth Shah here on tonight's live blog. Hello. There's also some "rain in the air" but teams are warming up right now so worry not.
