Nayeem Hasan shot to the limelight in early 2018 after he was picked in Bangladesh's Test squad to play Sri Lanka. At the time of his call-up, he was playing in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. The tall offspinner from Chittagong was in line to be Bangladesh's first Test cricketer born in the new millennium.
Nayeem was a fast bowler till Class 8 before taking to offspin. He is 6 feet tall, unusual for a Bangladeshi spinner; he said in an interview that he turned to spin before he hit his growth spurt. He made it to the Bangladesh U-19 side after performing well in the age-group competitions in 2015.
He made his first-class debut for Chittagong Division in January 2017, bowling a whopping 43 overs in his first innings. Later in the year, Nayeem took 12 wickets against Afghanistan U-19s during the home series. He rounded up 2017 with two BPL appearances, picking up Mushfiqur Rahim's wicket.
