Graham Clark had forged a respectable career as a dangerous white-ball hitter for Durham, before the arrival of Ryan Campbell as head coach allowed him to express the full range of his talent. Returned to the Championship side after playing three times in four years, Clark's middle-order aggression was a perfect fit for Campbell's buccaneering Division Two title-winners, as he racked up 818 runs at 58.42 with three hundreds.

He also scored a maiden T20 century, and confirmed his growing status in the limited-overs game by winning a Hundred call-up as an injury replacement for Oval Invincibles. Clark's power at the top of the order had been evident during Durham's run to the final of the 2021 Royal London One-Day Cup: he notched three hundreds and averaged 80.75 with a strike rate of 98.92 to finish as the competition's leading run-scorer.

Clark made his Championship debut for Durham as an opener, but it was after the club's relegation in 2017 that he was given the chance to claim a regular place in the middle order. A solid response included maiden List A and first-class hundreds, as he became a first-choice pick across the formats. The 2019 summer was a struggle, however, as he lost his place in the Championship side and managed just two white-ball fifties.
