†AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1988-89

At Perth, January 2 (day/night)

15-Apr-1990
At Perth, January 2 (day/night). Pakistan won by 38 runs. Toss: Pakistan. Pakistan's fifth match in the competition brought them their first victory on the same pitch as had been used the previous day. A record crowd for the ground, basking in unbroken sunshine, saw Aamer Malik play the major innings of the day after Pakistan had won the toss. Coming in in the tenth over he made an excellent 90 (135 balls, eight fours). Profligate with wides and no-balls. Australia contributed to their own downfall. Given a start by Boon and Marsh, who made 46 in fourteen overs for the first wicket, they then slumped to 102 for six, the sixteen-year-old Aaqib taking three of the first five wickets to fall and Aamer doing a useful job as a makeshift fifth bowler. Qadir was unfit and Mohsin Kamal had been dropped. On his return to international cricket after being seriously ill with cancer (his last appearance had been in the final of the World Cup in Calcutta, fourteen months earlier), O'Donnell had a good all-round match, taking a wicket, holding a catch and being Australia's top scorer. He was cheered to the echo all the way to the wicket.
Man of the Match: Aamer Malik. Attendance: 27,385.
