Up another shilling to 16, and the debate about the lbw law rumbled on, as schools and clubs wrote in their thoughts on the matter. MCC also printed a report, entitled "Reviving First-Class Cricket", concerned with the decline in attendances and the organisation of the county game. Stuart Surridge, Surrey's captain, led them to their fifth successive County Championship title, prompting Douglas Jardine to write an appreciation. Jim Laker also featured, after his amazing 19-wicket against Australia at Old Trafford. He appeared in the lead photo, and had his "wonderful year" assessed by Neville Cardus. Maurice Tate, the popular former England allrounder who played 39 Tests, died aged 61.
