At Bulawayo, August 24, 2005. New Zealand won by 192 runs. New Zealand 6 pts. Toss: Zimbabwe.
One-day international debut: A. J. Ireland.
New Zealand's innings was stuffed with records. They inflicted the worst thrashing in any oneday
international: their total was one short of the record, Sri Lanka's 398 for five against Kenya
in the 1995-96 World Cup, but that occupied 50 overs, while this match was reduced to 44 a side
after a delayed start. Vincent, a reluctant opener, scored 172 in 120 balls, a one-day high for New Zealand, beating Glenn Turner's 30-year-old record against East Africa; he also equalled Saeed
Anwar's 1996-97 record (broken two months later by Dhoni) for runs scored from boundaries in
a one-day international, with 16 fours and nine sixes. And his opening partnership of 204 with
Fleming was New Zealand's first double-century stand for any wicket. After Vincent went,
McCullum reached 50 in 21 balls, equalling a national record shared by McMillan and Lance
Cairns. The principal casualty was Blignaut, still not fully fit, who conceded 96 runs, the thirdmost
expensive spell in one-day internationals. Zimbabwe's batsmen survived an early blast from
Bond, and Streak saw them past 200, but they went down to their heaviest one-day defeat.
Man of the Match: L. Vincent.
